Implicit affinity networks and social capital

Abstract: Social networks are typically constructed based on explicit and well-defined relationships among individuals. In this paper, we describe another class of social networks, known as implicit affinity networks, where links are implicit in the patterns of natural affinities among individuals. An effective mathematical formulation of social capital based on implicit and explicit connections is given. Results with two Web communities, one focused on people's interests and one focused on people's blogs, exhibit rich … Show more

“…Second, network analysis is recently being applied to settings like ours in which edges represent similarity of purchases. Huang et al (2007) and Smith et al (2007) use co-purchase and co-occurrence data to build an "implicit" network of individuals. In these examples, the network is not strictly necessary for measuring similarity, but it aids in interpretation.…”

“…They refl ect the degree of trust, the crucial component of social capital, necessary for sustainable local development (Helliwell and Barrington-Leigh, 2010). So, networks appear as a fundamental factor in local development; the local authority, and its websites, playing an important role in creating, maintaining and strengthening them (see, in particular, Smith, 2009). …”

“…Actually, a broader hypothesis would imply a cultural connection, involving trust, networking, education and knowledge (see also Czapiewski and Janc, 2008;and Smith, 2009). The respective connection is not only visible and pertinent, but also surprisingly persistent (Chitu et al, 2012).…”
