Implications of land use/cover dynamics on soil erosion potential of agricultural watershed, northwestern highlands of Ethiopia

Abstract: Background: Assessment of soil loss rates is crucial to sustainably enhance the benefits of land resources and diminish the adverse impacts of land degradation thereby areas requiring immediate soil erosion management practices can be identified. The study aimed to examine the impacts of land cover dynamics on the spatiotemporal patterns of erosion hotspots. RUSLE factors were produced using GIS and remote sensing techniques. Results: The RUSLE model adapted to Ethiopian conditions was run for 2004 and 2014 wh… Show more

“…Nesse ponto, o sensoriamento remoto e os sistemas de informações geográficas (SIG) destacam-se por apresentarem diversas possibilidades de aplicações. Como vantagens dessa estratégia, tem-se a possibilidade de analisar grande volume de dados, obter informações em diferentes escalas de tempo e espaço (Esa et al, 2018) e relativo baixo investimento em recursos financeiros, logísticos e de mão de obra especializada.…”

“…It determines the relative effectiveness of soil and land cover management systems in controlling soil erosion (Kaltenrieder, 2007). Vegetation cover is a significant factor to control soil erosion rate (Esa et al, 2018). The land cover determines the portion of rainfall that infiltrates into the soil and converted into surface runoff, which is a driving force for soil erosion.…”

“…Support practice factor (P) describes the effectiveness of erosion control measures like contours, strip cropping and terracing to reduce soil loss rate from its average rate from unprotected land to tolerable estimated rate (Esa et al, 2018). The lesser P value represents the more effective support practice to reduce soil erosion and the larger P value represents the lesser effective support practice to reduce soil erosion (Adugna et al, 2015).…”

“…Urbanization is undeniably an ongoing global trend with substantial alterations of land use/land cover (LULC) (Rasul et al 2018;Deribew & Dalacho 2019). LULC changes are the main causes of global environmental change (Gashaw et al 2017;Hassen & Assen 2017;Esa et al 2018;Guzha et al 2018), and manifest in climatological, biodiversity and hydrological responses.…”
