Implications of Arch Warp Altitudes on an Ancient Masonry Bridge under Ground Movements

Abstract: Although only a few of the ancient masonry arch bridges (MABs) are in fairly good condition today, many ancient arch bridges are still in use. Over time, the condition of the masonry bridges declines and the safety requirements change. Therefore, it is important to examine these bridges under different influences. The strengthening of MABs is generally not essential. The major cause of damage to MABs is their insufficient width and height, and thus, it is not the safety but the usability that has restricted th… Show more

“…It aimed to compare the effect of arch elements of historical stone bridges on dynamic response and earthquake damage. The earthquake acceleration was applied in the direction perpendicular to the tempan wall, where the geometrically weakest strength of the bridge model would be, as used in similar academic studies [24,25,35,36]. The earthquake records applied to the bridge are offered in Table 2.…”

“…), and in [4] (geometrical survey, geotechnical investigation, sonic tests in combination with endoscopy to identify the construction typology of piers, etc.). In other studies, focusing on the modelling and the numerical calculations, although specific historical arch bridges are used as case studies, the data that needed to be implemented in the numerical models are mostly assumed, based on the literature or values of properties proposed by Codes or Guidelines are adopted (e.g., [5][6][7][8][9][10]).…”

“…In all the studies, whether they include full documentation of bridges or not, there is an element of modelling and numerical calculations, while there are studies that are purely analytical, although the geometry of an existing bridge is modelled (e.g., [9,16,17]).…”
