Implementing simulated practice learning for nursing students

Abstract: The learning and teaching of clinical skills for pre-registration nurses are currently high profile in the nursing arena, with clinical skills a central component of new curricula development. This article explores the development and implementation of a simulated practice learning exercise in the pre-registration nursing curriculum, and expounds the advantages and disadvantages of this approach. “…Video stimulus clips of exemplary practice have traditionally been seen to support practice-based education and training in both skills development and in the development of complex social interaction and interpersonal skills (Heath et al, 2007). In the current climate of competition for clinical placements, strategies that bring the woman (patient) and practitioner into the classroom assist students to learn authentic practice in a safe and supported environment are essential (Brooks et al, 2010). Authentic practice is not limited to video clips but can include activities such as demonstration, experiential learning, simulations, and practice-based scenarios or case studies.…”

“…Simulation is the creation of an event, situation or environment that replicates what participants encounter in the clinical setting. [20][21][22] High Fidelity Simulation is a technique which utilises a manikin to mimic characteristics of humans. The manikin has programmable software, with the capacity to replicate physiological parameters (such as breathing) and can be programmed to respond to nursing actions without a delay.…”

“…HFS is the creation of an event, situation or environment that attempts to replicate what nurses encounter in clinical practice. [14][15][16] In nursing education and research HFS utilises a manikin that has programmable software and has the capability to respond to nursing actions in real time. [17][18][19] A large nursing school in an Australian university provided the setting for this study.…”
