Implementing PBL in a Concrete Construction Course

Abstract: Her research interests include studying the role of engineering as a curricular context and problembased learning as an instructional strategy to facilitate students' mathematics and science learning. She works with teachers and students from traditionally under-served populations and seeks to understand challenges and solutions to support student academic readiness for college and career success.

“…Since the introduction of PBL in both courses, each year the PBL implementation was refined based on the assessment of student learning and instructor reflections from the previous year. A previously publication, discusses the initial implementation of the PBL in the CIM 4340 course (Hu, 2014), however, the focus of this study is on the assessment of PBL and particularly in concrete construction courses.…”

“…The fourth most common difficulty, "Working with less autonomous students" is also mentioned by Chen et al (2020) and other researchers, who noted that in the self-learning process, students have difficulties with identifying problems and transferring knowledge into practical solutions (Ahern, 2010;Bledsoe & Flick, 2012;Hu, Ortiz & Sriraman, 2014;Lutsenko, 2018). In this sense, Said, Adikan, Mekhilef and Abdrahim (2005: page 135) state: "One of the most pertinent questions to address is how to successfully instill a habit of critical thinking in students.…”

“…Another vital requirement of PBL might be self-learning skills, and some scholars assume that it is hard for EARLY VIEW Examining the Application of a Similar Problem-Based Learning Procedure students to solve real-life problems in a self-learning process (e.g. Bledsoe & Flick, 2012;Hu et al, 2014;Lutsenko, 2018). More importantly, students need to reflect on their own progress and achievements to obtain efficacious learning gains from PBL (Gratchev & Jeng, 2018).…”
