Implementing Green Chemistry in Chemical Manufacturing: A Survey Report

Abstract: Green chemistry is being implemented in chemical manufacturing to advance sustainability. A scouting survey and recent industry-wide reports find that several green chemistry principles and related metrics are routinely being implemented in the chemical manufacturing sector. A cross-section of stakeholders surveyed agree that broader adoption of the principles of green chemistry can be promoted by collaboration among companies to identify best practices and define opportunities to increase green chemistry impl… Show more

“…5,6 In particular, adsorption-based separations of multicomponent fluid mixtures represent an important alternative to numerous industrial processes such as distillation, which are significantly more energy intensive. 6,7 Many fundamental studies of adsorption have been undertaken over the past century in an effort to understand the details of the corresponding molecular-level processes. Density functional theories 8,9 and molecular simulation have emerged as some of the primary tools for modeling and understanding adsorption at the molecular level.…”

“…Green chemistry principles provide a different perspective that chemical manufacturers and the supply chain are beginning to implement (Alfonsi et al ; Dunn ; Giraud et al. ). Green chemistry is defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) as “the design of chemical products that reduce or eliminate the use of hazardous substances” (Dunn , 1452; Giraud et al.…”

“…Green chemistry is defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) as “the design of chemical products that reduce or eliminate the use of hazardous substances” (Dunn , 1452; Giraud et al. ). Green chemistry principles most relevant to industrial manufacturing of chemicals are (1) reduce waste, (2) prevent hazardous chemical exposure, (3) choose more‐efficient reactions, and (4) use less energy‐intensive processes.…”

“…5 The E-factor and atom economy concept has played a significant role in minimization of waste, which is usually generated from chemical industries during their manufacture processes. 6 Several solid base catalysts such as zeolites, metal oxides, mixed oxides and hydrotalcites have been developed for the manufacture of fine chemicals in heterogeneous systems. 7 Hydromagnesite [Mg 5 (CO 3 ) 4 (OH) 2 .4H 2 O] is a precursor of MgO the presence of carbonate and hydroxide functionalities makes it similar to hydrotalcites.…”
