Implementing FDM 3D Printing Strategies Using Natural Fibers to Produce Biomass Composite

Abstract: Current environmental concerns have led to a search of more environmentally friendly manufacturing methods; thus, natural fibers have gained attention in the 3D printing industry to be used as bio-filters along with thermoplastics. The utilization of natural fibers is very convenient as they are easily available, cost-effective, eco-friendly, and biodegradable. Using natural fibers rather than synthetic fibers in the production of the 3D printing filaments will reduce gas emissions associated with the producti… Show more

“…In addition, due to the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, the antimicrobial material can be used to fight the spread of the virus of the possible contaminated buttons instead of replacing the exist system [ 99 ]. Moreover, the FFF is an excellent, affordable, traditional technology [ 100 ] that can be incorporated with antimicrobial material with different natural material to produce different engineering components [ 101 , 102 ]. Eventually, using antimicrobial material through the 3D printing technology must be evaluated [ 103 ] to predict the final product properties [ 104 ] as well as to explore the possibilities of the failure while being in service [ 105 ] through experimental investigation, and even could be achieved theoretically through simulation [ 106 ], especially we are dealing with composite reinforced with different types and material of particulates.…”

“…Dealing with two different materials in the 3D printing process is not an easy issue to handle due to many factors that affect the quality and the characteristics of the final part especially whenever the filament used in the process is not made by the same manufacturer of the 3D Printer. 58 Besides, the open-source slicing software has many constraints that add other factors that would add more difficulties to the production of the bi-material 3D printed parts, especially whenever the 3D printer is not designed to handle this task. On the other hand, trying to use dual-core 3D Printers usually is designed to have one main nozzle for the main printed material and the other nozzle is used for the support filament, or what is named the breakaway material, or used with multi-extrusion 3D printing.…”

“…Recently, agricultural residues have been used as a loading material for 3D printing [ 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 ] as they reduce warping [ 54 , 55 , 56 , 57 ], enhance printing directionality [ 58 , 59 , 60 ], and display high specific mechanical properties [ 61 , 62 , 63 ]. However, in FFF there are some standing issues such as residues’ agglomeration, viscosity variations, high porosity, low thermal stability [ 64 ], and non-uniform physical and mechanical properties [ 61 ].…”
