Implementing a pressure ulcer prevention bundle into practice

Abstract: The implementation of a care bundle approach to delivering fundamental care in practice is now a recognised and effective way of translating research into practice, offering consistent care with resulting positive outcomes for the patient. A care bundle consists of a relatively small number of interventions for every patient to whom the bundle is applied. However, there must be evidence behind each individual intervention to indicate, if delivered, how it will reduce the risk to the patient. This paper reports… Show more

“…These results are in line with previous studies (42,47) where some areas of PU prevention practice bundle improved more than others. However, in this study, after the intervention the level of all frequencies in PU prevention practices was good, contrary to the previous studies (40,47). Also, the results of this study showed significantly positive improvement in all six areas of agreement on the PU prevention practices in the intervention care facility.…”

“…However, recent studies have stated that not only PU rates should be reported as an outcome of the intervention, but also compliance of the PU prevention bundle. The implementation of care bundles has been seen as a possibility to measure that best practice is being implemented with consistent compliance (40‐42).…”

“…Designed to deliver safe and effective care to targeted patients, care bundles help drive behaviour change 16,17 and, if directed towards the patient, increase their participation in healthcare 18 . Available care bundles aim to enhance the uptake of CPG 14 , prevent falls 19 , detect sepsis 20 , and prevent PIs 15,21 . In 2014, Australian researchers developed a patient-centred pressure injury prevention care bundle (PPIPCB) 10,22 which was deemed acceptable to both patients and clinicians 18 .…”
