Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities): Initial Good Practices Data

Gulnara N. Nabiyeva,
Stephen M. Wheeler,
Jonathan K. London
et al.

Abstract: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a central framework for guiding sustainable urban development. However, it is not clear how and where SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) is being implemented, and how such implementation might be improved. We investigate this subject by analyzing United Nations (UN) SDG Good Practices data from 2018 to 2021, using content analysis, classification, and descriptive statistics. The resulting analysis and classification is new in this field. We applied fi… Show more

“…The effectiveness of public transportation is dependent on the ability of city planning to interconnect lines that depict the arrangement of streets or roads of the overall amount of road network within the urban boundary [58]. The efficiency of road network impacts the time spent on travelling; the lower the average travel time, the lower expenditure on transportation [59]. Environmentally, reducing travel time decreases non-renewable energy consumption which leads to environmental degradation, particularly transportation is still mainly dependent on fossil fuels sources in developing countries [55].…”

“…SDG 11 emerged as a stand-alone goal to address the need for sustainable development from an urban perspective, favouring cities and human settlements that are more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable (Berisha et al, 2022). It addresses a variety of issues, such as affordable housing, infrastructure, and cultural and natural heritage (Nabiyeva et al, 2023). There is also recognition of the cross-cutting nature of urban issues, which have an impact on several other Sustainable Development Goals, including SDGs 1,6,7,8,9,12,15,and 17.…”

“…In September 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda, featuring 17 global and universally applicable SDGs. Initial progress towards implementing the SDGs has been slow [29]. According to relevant reports, the shift in development pathways to generate the transformation required to meet the SDGs by 2030 is not yet advancing at the speed or scale required [30,31].…”
