Implementation of Structured Physical Activity in the Pediatric Stem Cell Transplantation

Abstract: The peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) represents a specific, but stressful therapy for hemato-oncological diseases. While for adults, data suggest positive eff ects for a supportive sport therapy, this question is not evaluated sufficiently for children. The objective of this study was to examine the integration of sports activity into pediatric PBSCT and to indicate attainable results. “…San Juan et al 30 demonstrated positive effects on VO 2peak , muscle strength and quality of life during an 8-week intrahospital training programme in children 2-12 months post-HSCT. Rosenhagen et al 31 trained endurance and strength in children from day 1 to day 14 post HSCT and reported a decreased loss of muscular power, a trend toward better quality of life and reduced fatigue compared with matched controls.…”

“…Five randomized, controlled trials have been identified (28)(29)(30)(31)33) and were ranked with evidence level "2b. " Six studies reached level "3b" as they included a control group but were not randomized (8,27,32,(34)(35)(36)). Six studies were classified level "4" (19-26) because they did not enroll a control group.…”

“…The fact that initial literature research and studies revealed that there a very few German publications on CRF [6] and that it occurs also in children [14], led to initial steps being taken. Subsequently, the department for stem cell transplantation initiated a study on the subject of sports therapy funded by the José Carreras Leukemia Foundation [12], which is already well advanced. First results are expected for 2013.…”
