Implementation of SNR estimation based energy detection on USRP and GNU radio for cognitive radio networks

Abstract: Development of smart spectrum sensing techniques is the most important task in the design of a cognitive radio system which uses the available spectrum efficiently. The adaptive SNR estimation based energy detection technique has the dual benefit of improving the efficiency of spectrum usage by capitalizing on the underutilization of the spectrum in an adaptive and iterative fashion, as well as reducing the hardware resources leading to easy implementation on a versatile and diverse group of cognitive radio in… Show more

“…The PC is using a virtual machine (VMware® Workstation 16 Pro) to run GRC software version 3.8.1.0 based on the operating system (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS). The GRC is software that provides input/output blocks and enables the implementation of the DSP blocks and SDR algorithms of the proposed method, which is presented in experiment [39]. On the transmitting side, a single USRP N210-SDR transmitter is connected to a PC via Gigabit Ethernet.…”

“…Some popular spectrum sensing methods include matched filter detection [14], cyclostationary feature detection [15], and energy detection [16]. Energy detection is the most popular approach because of its simplicity [17], [18]. The energy detection approach generally does not require any information about PU parameters though it still requires information related to the noise.…”

“…Several researches have evaluated the energy-detectionbased spectrum sensing approach simulated using a GNU Radio [16], [18], [20], [21]. In this paper, a spectrum sensing decision block that compares the energy of a signal and the threshold was built.…”
