Abstract: Few studies have tested specific implementation strategies. Such research is needed to determine how to accelerate the diffusion of these evidence-based practices to the SUD treatment field.

“…A potential limitation of the present systematic review is the heterogeneity of the included reviews, which was highlighted by review authors (Conlon et al 2017;Crisford et al 2018;Kelly et al 2017;Knudsen 2017), and may suggest a need for more consistent reporting. A note of caution must therefore be added when interpreting the results of this review, given the mean AMSTAR score of included reviews was 3.8/7.…”

“…Specific areas for improvement based on our ratings include ensuring authors publish their study protocols or register their review to ensure an "a priori" design, and ensuring authors make clear their search strategy includes a gray literature search. Two systematic reviews among the lowest scoring in our review (Knudsen 2017;Verhaeghe et al 2011) failed to use a comprehensive search strategy (at least two electronic sources). Consequently, relevant studies may have been missed, which may prevent a comprehensive assessment of the evidence base.…”

“…The belief that smoking cessation will interfere with efforts to attain or maintain sobriety is common among those with alcohol use disorder (Gulliver, Kamholz, & Helstrom, 2006; Martin, Rohsenow, MacKinnon, Abrams, & Monti, 2006). Moreover, beliefs that smoking cessation will interfere with SUD treatment may be reinforced by similar beliefs among some clinicians (Bobo, Slade, & Hoffman, 1995; Pagano, Tajima, & Guydish, 2016; Richter, 2006; Sheals, Tombor, McNeill, & Shahab, 2016), as well as limited availability of smoking cessation services in SUD treatment settings (Currie, Nesbitt, Wood, & Lawson, 2003; Knudsen, in press; Knudsen, Muilenburg, & Eby, 2013; Knudsen, Studts, Boyd, & Roman, 2010; Nahvi, Blackstock, Sohler, Thompson, & Cunningham, 2014). Thus, individuals presenting to SUD treatment have particularly poor smoking cessation rates and are vulnerable to a broader array of potential barriers to smoking cessation relative to those without SUDs, highlighting the importance of understanding barriers to smoking cessation in this population.…”

“…Half of all included papers assessed smoking status as a single item; all reported an increase in this practice . All services should be assessing smoking status, but there is also the problem of what specific smoking cessation care strategies are available after a person is identified as a current tobacco smoker . For those relatively few papers ( n = 4) that examined specific smoking cessation care strategies as single items, nearly all reported on the provision of NRT, prescribing of stop smoking medicines, counselling about smoking cessation and educational resources .…”

“…Knudsen et al . conducted a review on implementation studies of smoking cessation care in the AOD setting, finding that organizational interventions improve the provision of care, but only modestly. Despite the contribution to the literature, this review provides little exploration of specific organizational change strategies.…”
