Implementation of Recovery Programming on an Inpatient Acute Psychiatric Unit and Its Impact on Readmission

Abstract: After implementation of recovery-oriented care measures, there was a decrease in percentage of readmissions to the unit. In addition, this decrease was sustained and was shown to improve over time as recovery-oriented programming was further developed on the unit. These data suggest that Veterans Affairs Medical Centers should consider adding tools and procedures to successfully implement recovery programming on inpatient units and efforts should include direct involvement of patients in their own recovery jou… Show more

“…On the other hand, prior studies show that schizophrenia patients, by keeping occupied and working with other people, develop the ability to interact, and improve their social relations, [ 67 , 68 ] as well as building friendships [ 69 ]. Previous studies [ 70 , 71 ] have pointed out how these interventions must be established in order to help people who suffer from persistent and severe mental health problems that limit their daily life and their ability to fulfil their personal objectives, i.e. these interventions must be directed towards the development of strategies to face the difficulties of daily living.…”

“…One paper is about physicians being trained to psychiatric/psychosocial rehabilitation (PSR) principles [38]. Several are about improving already established practices for inpatients [39,40], for instance through the implementation of advance directives [41], and at a system's level [42].…”

“…The "Readmission Rate by Discharge Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) for Thirty Day Time Frame" report was used to gather information for the same VAMC and then narrowed by searching for the mental health DRG numeric groupings to separate mental health readmissions from other (e.g., medical or surgical) admissions in the same 30-day period. Searching for the month and year further narrowed this information (Koval et al, 2016).…”

“…Given systematic reviews of the evidence and the VHA’s recommendation for implementation of Illness Management and Recovery (IMR); IMR content substantively informed this local curriculum development as a starting point (SAMSHA, 2009). Coauthors of this article have previously summarized evidence for IMR in a doctoral capstone project (Bartholomew & Zechner, 2014; Gilbride et al, 2014; Koval et al, 2016; McQuire et al, 2014; Saylers, Godfrey, et al, 2009; Saylers, Hicks, et al, 2009). However, there is little research or quality improvement reports on implementation of IMR or other evidence-based recovery-oriented services targeting Veterans during inpatient stays (McQuire et al, 2015; McQuire, White, White, & Salyers, 2013).…”
