Application of the ZED Depth Sensor for Painting Robot Vision System Development

This paper presents the use of the ZED depth sensor in a robot-based painting application. The use of a stereo depth sensor is a very important factor in robotic applications, since it is both the initial and the essential step in a sequence of robotic operations, where the goal is to detect and extract the useful surface and objects or the obstacle on a wall that is not intended for painting. The ZED depth sensor was used for surface recording and navigation of our painting robot. Later, wall extraction was performed using simple image processing and morphological operations in a surface extraction algorithm. The client's instruction was to use well-known, simple, and proven image processing operations in the algorithm to ensure both reliable and smooth operation of the robot's vision system in an industrial environment. The experiments showed that the developed algorithm detects and extracts the wall successfully under various depth measurement conditions.

The application of robots or robotic systems for painting parts is becoming increasingly conventional; to improve reliability, productivity, consistency and to decrease waste. However, in Pakistan only highend Industries are able to afford the luxury of a robotic system for various purposes. In this study we propose an economical Painting Robot that a small-scale industry can install in their plant with ease. The importance of this robot is that being cost effective, it can easily be replaced in small manufacturing industries and therefore, eliminate health problems occurring to the individual in charge of painting parts on an everyday basis. To achieve this aim, the robot is made with local parts with only few exceptions, to cut costs; and the programming language is kept at a mediocre level. Image processing is used to establish object recognition and it can be programmed to paint various simple geometries. The robot is placed on a conveyer belt to maximize productivity. A four DoF (Degree of Freedom) arm increases the working envelope and accessibility of painting different shaped parts with ease. This robot is capable of painting up, front, back, left and right sides of the part with a single colour. Initially CAD (Computer Aided Design) models of the robot were developed which were analyzed, modified and improved to withstand loading condition and perform its task efficiently. After design selection, appropriate motors and materials were selected and the robot was developed. Throughout the development phase, minor problems and errors were fixed accordingly as they arose. Lastly the robot was integrated with the computer and image processing for autonomous control. The final results demonstrated that the robot is economical and reduces paint wastage.

In this investigative study, the Taguchi design (L9) of experiments with TOPSIS multi-objective optimization is used for the robot nanopainting. The optimization objective is to maximize the film glue individually and minimize the surface blemishes and film thickness by varying the IRB 1410 robot painting parameters, such as the robot speed, pressure, and distance. The multi-wall carbon nanotube is infused into the paint materials using the ultrasonication process, and the mechanical properties are analysed with a comparison to regular paint materials. The virtual robot cycle time analysis is carried out for three different robot pathway patterns, namely linear, zig-zag, and circular. It is then compared with real-time experimental robot nanopaint on cold rolled close annealing steel materials. The obtained results show that surface roughness and thickness are minimized by 54% and 33.4%, respectively, using the robot nano spray coating when compared with regular spray coating. The film adhesive of robot Nano spray coating is maximized by 2.8% more than normal spray coating. A fuzzy logic expert system model is used to evaluate the surface finish characteristics of the nanopaint surface with low prediction error and with 89.2% confidence level. Heat transfer analysis of the robot nano-coated substrate is compared with that of the robot normal-coated substrate.
