Implementation of hybrid parallel kanban-CONWIP system: A case study

Abstract: The most common form of production control strategy in lean management is the pull system. One emerging form of pull system uses kanban and CONWIP systems to handle products with different demand patterns. Case studies have protractedly depicted the actual implementation of pull systems; however, the use of hybrid systems is rare. This paper examines the procedures involved in implementing a hybrid system in a low variety/low volume shop floor. This paper presents discussions on shop floor constraints in the p… Show more

“…Prachař et al (2014) Describes the implementation process of kanban at a manufacturing company, highlighting the problems related to human factors and how the company overcome them. Prakash et al (2014) Shows how a hybrid kanban-CONWIP was implemented into a supplier of a well-known aircraft, emphasizing the importance of employees training. Crop et al (2015) Describes the cultural changes necessary for CONWIP implementation in a hospital, specially overcoming concern about underutilization of resources.…”

“…In order to mitigate this risk, it is interesting to implement a card-based system during a low demand period, when eventual failures can be correct without affecting service level. This was done in the case presented by Prakash et al (2014), but not in the LCS, since kanban was implemented in a period in which production supervisors were focused on delivering higher production volume. Therefore, the first difficulties faced during the implementation discouraged employees to implement kanban.…”

“…Although many practical cases prove that CONWIP systems are effective, only Prakash and Chin (2014) have investigated the implementation of a modified Kanban and hybrid system. This case study proves that pull systems can be successfully implemented in production environments that do not conform to the typical prerequisites of the Kanban system.…”

“…Literature on CONWIP system modeling and simulation is rich and can be used to build and enhance theoretical understanding. Nevertheless, literature on the real applications of hybrid CONWIP/Kanban by case study is limited (Framinan et al , 2003; Prakash and Chin, 2014).…”
