Implementation of defected ground structure for microstrip filtenna design

Abstract: A microstrip patch filtenna inspired by defected ground structure (DGS) is presented in this article. It uses modified split ring resonator and capacitance loaded strip as a radiating element. The presented structure is incorporated with a pair of double U-shaped DGS (DU-DGS) to obtain filtering characteristics. The width of DU-DGS plays a vital role in selecting attenuation poles of the filter as well as for the filtenna circuit. The separation distance between the DU-DGS also affects the resonant frequency o… Show more

“…Filters designed using SIW technology and resonators can also be integrated with radiating elements to design filtennas. However, they offer narrow impedance bandwidth, which can be mitigated using a double substrate layer in the former case and defected ground structure (DGS) in the latter [7, 8]. A low-profile two-pole filtenna is designed by uniting a ground-imposed coupled line resonator with a monopole antenna [9].…”

“…The demand for wireless services have seen exemplary growth, whether it is Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Worldwide Interoperatability for Microwave Access (WiMax), Global Positioning System (GPS) or portable devices such as mobile phone, Bluetooth, medical equipments, etc. Antenna and filters being inherent passive components in RF front‐end system of wireless communication, there is exponential surge in research targeting to achieve the desired features like light weight, compact, low cost robust front‐end system with good filtering and radiating properties 1‐18 . The performance of front‐end system deeply affects the efficiency and quality of wireless communication system.…”
