Implementation of CNG as an Alternative Fuel for Automobiles in Nigeria: Benefits and Recommendations

Abstract: In an attempt to address major causes of pollution from gas flaring and transportation, the Nigerian government introduced the use of CNG (compressed natural gas) as an alternative fuel for automobiles in 1997. However, progress has been very slow as the government has concentrated more on LNG (liquefied natural gas) exportation, LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), and gas to power projects. These projects have aided in reducing gas flaring, but pollution from transportation is still increasing. This article provid… Show more

“…Emission-effecting factors are also discussed in detail by Chiou et al [ 35 ] and Clark et al [ 36 ]. Ibeneme and Ighalo [ 37 ] reviewed the benefits of CNG as an alternative fuel in automobiles in Nigeria with emphasis on the development of carbon taxation, access to refueling, favorable market-based policies, and subsidized conversion expense to promote CNG as a fuel. The comparative performance and emission analyses of gasoline to LPG and CNG showed enhanced brake power, and high unburned hydrocarbons and carbon emissions [ 38 ].…”

“…The EU Transport 2050 roadmap sets a big shift to cleaner cars and cleaner fuels for urban mobility-a 50% shift away from conventionally fueled cars by 2030, phasing them out of cities by 2050 [16]. In an attempt to abate the issues of transport energy scarcity and increased road emission, the Nigerian government introduced the use of CNG in its policies as an automobile fuel to improve urban air and reduce adverse health effects [17]. To improve its gas utilization capacity, Nigeria introduced several projects such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), gas to liquids (GTL), natural gas to power, and compressed natural gas (CNG) [17].…”

To improve its gas utilization capacity, Nigeria introduced several projects such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), gas to liquids (GTL), natural gas to power, and compressed natural gas (CNG) [17]. The Egyptian government, through the Ministry of Petroleum, supported the NG programs by initiating the CNG commercialization process, stimulating the growth of the CNG market by providing a five-year tax exemption for CNG-approved companies, and introducing high-tech solutions such as the "Gas Card" system.…”
