Road traffic accidents (RTAs) have become a serious problem worldwide as they incur losses of around 2% of a country's gross domestic product (GDP). RTAs are one of the major causes of death and injury in developing countries like India. To enable governments to take policy decisions on road safety, it is necessary that good research is undertaken to estimate the cost of accidents. This kind of study will help governments make important decisions on investment in traffic safety, improvement of roads and other facilities. On the other hand, evaluation and estimation of the costs of RTAs will help governments ascertain economic feasibility of policy decisions given limited economic resources. Apart from humanitarian losses, the contribution to economic losses from RTAs is alarmingly high, as most people involved in accidents are from the most economically active and productive agegroups of a society. The main objective of this study is to establish the cost components of road accidents in Nagpur city, Maharashtra, India. The methodologies for such studies generally vary according to traffic pattern, modal share, accident pattern, etc. This study makes use of a system dynamics approach, which provides a comprehensive understanding of the problem for Indian cities. Data were collected and collated with major inputs from the Traffic Department of the city for all road accidents from 2010 to 2015. The study found that the costs recorded for RTAs amounted to INR 935.5 million in 2015, which was 0.09% of the city's GDP. In addition, major cost components were evaluated by varying the severity level.

In the present scenario, Road traffic accidents (RTAs) become an alarming problem over the globe as they leads to approx. 2.6% total loss of country’s gross domestic product (GDP). It is considered as one of the leading cause of mortalities, disabilities and morbidities due to road accidents in developing countries like India. To enable governments to take policy decisions on road safety, it is necessary that good research is undertaken to estimate the cost of accidents. This study will help government to take decisions while planning investment on road safety, facilities on roads, awareness signs and board etc. Meanwhile, estimation and evaluation of economic loss due to RTAs will help governments to frame policy and take important decisions within limited economic resources. Apart from humanitarian losses, there is increase in economic loss due to RTAs because most of the victims involved in accidents are from productive age groups of a society. The main objective of this study is to estimate the cost components of road accidents in two major districts namely Haridwar and Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. The methodologies for such studies generally vary according to traffic pattern, number of accidents, black spots, population etc. This study makes use of an empirical approach as Cost benefit Analysis consist of Human Capital Approach for cost estimation which provides a vast understanding of the problem for hilly scenario. Secondary data were taken from Transport Research Wing, Government of Uttarakhand for all road accidents from 2016 to 2018 and primary data were collected from randomly selected victims through structured questionnaire and informed consent.

One of the ways to combat food insecurity as world population rises is the reduction of food losses. Drying is one of the oldest methods of food preservation and hence reduces food losses. Solar drying uses energy from the sun and an absorber material to carry out drying of produce. In this project, a solar dryer was designed, constructed and its performance was evaluated. The dryer has overall dimensions of 1000mm by 410mm by 700mm. The inner part of the dryer compartment was lagged with aluminum foil to act as an insulator. The solar collector made of galvanized sheet and the glass on top of it have an area of 800mm by 380mm. Fresh scotch bonnet pepper was used as the produce of choice. The pepper was dried in 2 experiments for 3 weeks each. 200g of pepper was used and weighed to measure weight loss periodically. Temperature and humidity of the drying chamber and the surrounding were measured with data loggers throughout the periods of the experiments. The results showed that the ambient temperature during the experiments was higher than the temperature of the drying chamber in the early hours of the morning between 4am and 10am. During every other period, the temperature in the drying chambers was higher than the ambient temperature. An average moisture content of 81.3% w.b. was removed from the pepper during the experiments. The average efficiency of the dryer was 28.4%.
