Implementation of an FPGA-Based Current Control and SVPWM ASIC with Asymmetric Five-Segment Switching Scheme for AC Motor Drives

Abstract: This paper presents the design and implementation of an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) for a discrete-time current control and space-vector pulse-width modulation (SVPWM) with asymmetric five-segment switching scheme for AC motor drives. As compared to a conventional three-phase symmetric seven-segment switching SVPWM scheme, the proposed method involves five-segment two-phase switching in each switching period, so the inverter switching times and power loss can be reduced by 33%. In addition, … Show more

“…Improving the bandwidth of the current loop is the most important part of the three-loop control. Therefore, this paper designs a multi-axis current loop control system based on FPGA to meet the requirements of high precision and fast response [5] . Hardware description language is used to realize the hardware logic module and each control module works independently in parallel to improve the control frequency of the motor and avoid the occurrence of delay.…”

Tsai et al [3] implemented FPGA-based current control and SVPWM ASIC for AC motor drives, which could reduce power loss by 33% compared to a conventional method. Itajiba et al investigated a Y-∆ starting of induction motors.…”

“…The modeling can be further classified as d-q modeling and the model in phase-variable form according to the different coordinate reference frames. The former is usually used for developing vector control algorithm in the synchronously rotating d-q reference frame [30,31], and the latter which belongs to circuit component based model can be emulated as a real machine and connected directly to a power electronic converter for system integrated simulation analysis [32][33][34]. In the PSIM simulation tool, there has existed a synchronous machine element in the Motor Drive Module, which can be used as the CPA element for simulation analysis [35].…”
