Wearable medical devices that would benefit from mechanical flexibility and new form factors represent a great shift in direction of research in the field of printed electronics. The minimal functionality desired from wearable medical devices is the monitoring of vital signs. Pulse rate and blood oxygenation are considered primary vital signs that help to evaluate the general physical health of a person. The methods used to measure pulse rate and blood oxygenation with sensors based on organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic photodiodes (OPDs) are reported here. Departing from the conventional practice of using red (630 nm) and infrared (940 nm) light for measuring pulse oxygenation, we have successfully implemented solution processed red (626 nm) and green (532 nm) OLEDs fabricated from polyfluorene blends in an all-organic optoelectronic pulse oximeter sensor. The red and green OLEDs operate at 9 V, 1 kHz, and transmit light through a human index finger. The transmitted light is sensed by an OPD placed on the opposite side of the finger. After filtering and amplification, the photoplethysmogram (PPG) signal is obtained and used to accurately measure pulse rate and blood oxygenation.

A proof-of-concept design of a patient monitoring solution for intensive care unit environments has been presented. It is end-to-end standard-based, using ISO/IEEE 11073 (X73) in the bedside environment and EN13606 to communicate the information to an electronic healthcare record (EHR) server. At the bedside end, the system is a plug-and-play sensor network communicating with a gateway that collects medical information and sends the data to a monitoring server. The monitoring server transforms this information into an EN13606 extract to be stored on the EHR server. The system has been implemented to comply with the last X73 and EN13606 available versions and tested in a laboratory environment to demonstrate the feasibility of an end-to-end standard-based solution.

A secure, home-to-remote database communication hierarchy using Health Level Seven (HL7) has been developed. Measurements acquired from the patient via a wireless, wearable monitoring system are inserted into a local database using LabVIEW. Periodically, the HL7 client securely updates the remote database with information from the local database. HL7 communications are performed by Interfaceware's Chameleon software. Using Chameleon's flexible interface, doctors and researchers may access these patient data securely, confidentially, and remotely.
