Implementation of a sensor node for monitoring and classification of physiological signals in an edge computing system

Abstract: We describe the design and development of sensor nodes, based on Edge computing technologies, for the processing and classification of events detected in physiological signals such as the electrocardiographic signal (ECG is the electrical signal of the heart), temperature, heart rate, and human movement. The edge device uses a 32-bit Tensilica microcontroller-based module with the ability to transmit data wirelessly using Wi-Fi. In addition, algorithms for classification and detection of movement patterns were… Show more

“…Before transmission, data must be filtered and compressed to an ideal size. 3) Edge IT data processing [67], [94], [100], [109], [122], [133], [140], [168]- [170], [216], [220]- [223] Before reaching the cloud center, the digitized and aggregated IoT data is processed further. Edge devices do sophisticated analytics and preprocessing, which may include machine learning and visual representation.…”

“…One way that IoT edge computing may be used to protect humans is to automatically shut down machines when someone enters a prohibited area at a factory. Autonomous cars require data in order to make critical real-time decisions that might mean the difference between life and death on the road [24], [26], [67], [100], [109], [133], [145], [184], [186], [216], [220], [221], [267], [268], [293], [297], [335].…”

“…In addition, some solutions perform the presentation of the results, trace curves, using standard computer equipment, databases [16], [18], [19], data analysis software such as MATLAB [21], Labview [22] and Python [19], [16], without considering local monitoring capabilities such as liquid-crystal display (LCD) touch screens [23]. In addition to this, validations of the systems are carried out only with simulation [25] or using synthetics [19], [20], therefore the mentioned limitations can be reduced by adding wireless transmission capabilities [26], granting mobility to the device and contributing to reduce the gap in your research with solutions based on portable and ubiquitous systems.…”
