Implementation of a Robotic System for Overhead Drilling Operations: A Case Study of the Jaibot in the UAE

Abstract: The use of robots has typically improved workers’ health and safety and increased productivity and quality in manufacturing. Current advances in robotic and computer technology, combined with BIM, have led to new applications in construction. However, there is no general framework to guide the implementation of robots under current construction working schemes. Many questions and challenges need to be answered and overcome before robots can be economically and safely introduced to construction sites. Some ques… Show more

“…Considering the above findings, it can be analyzed that it is the responsibility of the project management team and the members involved in it to adequately implement RPA within the processes and tasks of the organization. For instance, the implementation of the robot named "poppy" in the LPAN Process or a robotic system (Jaibot) for planning as well as executing the operations of overhead drilling [31]. Similarly, 3 bots were effectively deployed for enhancing the processing of customer services availed by the government [32].…”

“…On the other hand, newly developed products with a high level of automation are progressively introduced into the market. Frequently, they are based on completely new equipment and process handling concepts transferred over from robotic manufacturers or other industry domains, e.g., overhead drilling robots (Xu et al 2022). Most of these newly introduced equipment types can be classified as single-task construction robots .…”

“…Workers are responsible for dexterous tasks like positioning bricks, while collaborative robots are responsible for physically demanding tasks such as lifting and placing bricks (Bock & Linner, 2016;Mule 135 Owner's Manual, 2018;Petters & Belden, 2014). Furthermore, the newly developed construction robot, Hilti Jaibot (Xu et al, 2022), is designed to work alongside human workers, permitting them to closely supervise operations, especially during the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) construction process.…”
