Implementation and testing of passive control devices based on shape memory alloys

Abstract: Two families of passive seismic control devices exploiting the peculiar properties of shape memory alloy (SMA) kernel components have been implemented and tested within the MANSIDE project (Memory Alloys for New Seismic Isolation and Energy Dissipation Devices). They are special braces for framed structures and isolation devices for buildings and bridges. Their most important feature is their extreme versatility, i.e. the possibility to obtain a wide range of cyclic behaviour * from supplemental and fully re-c… Show more

“…In addition, in recent times, many structural systems have been developed using SMA wires and bars (Alam et al, 2007). SMA wires have been used mostly for steel braces (Dolce et al, 2000; Lafortune et al, 2007; Ma et al, 2004; Zhu and Zhang, 2007, etc.) and isolation devices (Dezfuli and Alam, 2013), and bars have been used for reinforced concrete bridge piers (Muntasir Billah and Alam, 2015; Saiidi and Wang, 2006), bridge restrainers (Alam et al, 2012; Andrawes and DesRoches, 2007), and concrete beam-column joints (Youssef et al, 2008).…”

“…Due to the excellent performances, different types of SMA dampers have been developed, and they were installed to the structures for enhancing the seismic performance (Clark et al, 1995; Dolce et al, 2000; Li et al, 2008; Ma and Yam, 2011; Miller et al, 2012; Ozbulut et al, 2011; Zhu and Zhang, 2007). For example, Zhu and Zhang (2007) developed a new SMA-based damper.…”

“…The MANSIDE (Memory alloys for new seismic isolation and energy dissipation devices) project was a major program (Cardone et al, 2006; Dolce and Cardone, 2001a, 2001b; Dolce et al, 2000, 2005), in the study of SMA structural passive vibration control. The project developed energy dissipation devices based on NiTi SMA wires.…”
