“…Subsequent series have shown effective fixation with smaller implants. 38 We routinely use 2.4-mm plates for border digits and multiple metacarpal fractures and 2.0-mm implants for smaller patients and those unstable fractures of the middle and ring finger not amenable to the K-wire techniques mentioned earlier. The use of fixed angle devices such as condylar blade plates provides rigid fixation in which fragment size accommodates only one screw ( Figs 8A and 8B).…”

“…Deliberate intraoperative interventions include selecting low-profile implants, confirming appropriate screw lengths and tendon excursion after fixation, and interposition of periosteum or soft tissue between the plate and the extensor mechanism. 38,40…”

“…Bioabsorbable plates show stability comparable to that attained with titanium constructs, according to studies in cadaveric and animal models. Future research examining the use of these techniques in hand surgery may shed light on when they should be used for metacarpal fractures (12,19,25,26).…”

“…
Rigid internal fixation of fractures in the hand using mini-plates allows rapid rehabilitation and recovery (Chen et al, 1994). However, there are many plating systems and the results obtained using the various systems differ significantly (Büchler and Fischer, 1987;Pfeiffer et al, 1994;Puckett et al, 1992).Earlier small fragment miniplating systems designed for hand surgery employed stainless steel plates and screws. These were too large to be of use in fractures distal to the metacarpophalangeal joints (MCPJ) and required secondary plate removal in up to 75% of cases (Büchler & Fischer, 1987;Puckett et al, 1992).
