Implantable transvenous cardioverter-defibrillators.

Abstract: Transvenous cardioverter-defibrillator implantation is practical in most candidates. Implant DFTs are usually low, surgical morbidity and postoperative complications are modest, therapy of VT and VF is efficient, and survival is excellent.

“…It was soon demonstrated that ICDs were effective in the reversion of sustained ventricular tachycardia and fibrillation [227][228][229][230] . However, the full clinical value of these devices was not shown until clinical trials, utilizing all-cause mortality as the primary end-point, were undertaken.…”

“…The appearance of transvenous cardioverter/defibrillators 112 , reducing morbidity and mortality related to their implantation, and the lower current cost of antiarrhythmic devices have allowed a wider use of these systems in our country. It is worth noting that the most modern devices may release several types of stimulation, such as antitachycardia, low-energy cardioversion, and high-energy defibrillation shocks, and may also function as an antibradycardia pacemaker.…”

“…Although ICD therapy has proved to be efficient and reliable in preventing sudden cardiac death [2], it is far from ideal. There are several known adverse effects secondary to the administration of strong electrical shocks which are caused by the high field strengths required to terminate fibrillation with a sufficiently high probability.…”
