Impinging jets – a short review on strategies for heat transfer enhancement

Abstract: In industrial applications, heat and mass transfer can be considerably increased using impinging jets. A large number of flow phenomena will be generated by the impinging flow, such as: large scale structures, large curvature involving strong shear and normal stresses, stagnation in the wall boundary layers, heat transfer with the impinged wall, small scale turbulent mixing. All these phenomena are highly unsteady and even if nowadays a substantial number of studies in the literature are dedicated, the impingi… Show more

“…Therefore, in order to maintain a plug flow and intensify heat and mass transfer, generating vorticity in the flow regions is a key success factor. This can be achieved using several methods that exist in the literature, such as jets [5] and turbulence promoters or vorticity generators for generating embedded vortices [6], [7], and wall curvature [8]- [10] for inducing secondary flows (Dean vortices). This last technique leads to implementing corrugated geometries in compact HEX reactors.…”

“…In recent years, both experimental and numerical investigation tools and techniques have undergone exponential developments that allow for a deeper understanding of the phenomena involved in the impinging jets. Various review articles have approached the subject of heat and mass transfer in impinging jets beginning with 1977 [13] and continuing later with [14][15][16][17][18].…”

“…Multiple Impinging jets provide the best configuration for convective heat and mass transfer as well as forces, due to the jet flow acting on the sheets. The heat transfer caused by the turbulent impinging jet has been extensively investigated by various researchers [1][2][3]. The simple case of a single impinging jet has been widely studied both experimentally and numerically and hence forms a good platform for numerical model validation.…”
