“…Three principal forms of imperialism are evident through history. First, during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries European mercantilism characterized the &dquo;old imperialism.&dquo; Second, the European empire building of 1870 and thereafter represented a shif't from informal to formal mechanisms of control and influence in the colonies during a period known as the &dquo;new imperialism&dquo; (see Fieldhouse, 1961, for a useful review of ideas on the literature on the old and new imperialisms).
