A liquid Soap production Machine was developed and evaluated to facilitate local production of liquid soap in Nigeria. A Preliminary study of the liquid soap production process was carried out within the local soap industry to collect necessary information and establish the appropriate production procedure. This was translated into the design concept of the machine. Detailed design of the components of the machine was done followed by its fabrication. The developed machine which was powered by a 1 Hp (0.746 kW) variable speed electric motor comprises a main mixer, two pre mixers, machine frame, V-belt drive and geared drive systems. All materials used in the fabrication of the machine were sourced locally. Result of machine evaluation revealed that the machine run smoothly in operation. Also, it was established that drudgery and fatigue associated with local production of liquid soap had been substantially reduced according to the responses from the users of the developed machine. The viscosity and turbidity of the liquid soap produced using the developed machine was found to be higher than that of the manually produced one while its viscosity was found satisfactorily at par with that of the liquid soap produced using one of the commercially available mixing machines (MMs). However, the cost of production of the machine developed herein and its subsequent maintenance cost is cheaper than that of the MMs.

Serious damage may occur to concrete hydraulic structures, such as water galleries, spillways, and stilling basins, due to the abrasive erosion caused by the presence of solid particles in the flow. This underlines the importance of being capable in providing characterization of the concrete from the point of view of its vulnerability to abrasive erosion, in order to improve the design of the structure and the material selection. Nevertheless, the existing apparatus for concrete abrasive erosion testing are either far from allowing realistic simulation of the actual environment in which this phenomenon occurs, or show a large degree of complexity and cost. An alternative method has been developed with the aid of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). CFD was first employed to verify the effectiveness of a new laboratory equipment. Afterwards, a parameter has been introduced which, by successful comparison against preliminary experiments, proved suitable to quantify the effect of the fluid dynamic conditions on the concrete abrasive erosion, thereby opening the way to CFD-based customization of the apparatus. In the future, the synergy of numerical and physical modelling will allow developing predictive models for concrete erosion, making it possible to reliably simulate real structures.

ABSTRACT:The flow field and solid distribution in a stirred tank equipped with four side-entering agitators were investigated using both experimental measurements and CFD simulations. Experiments were carried out to determine the regularity of the solid sediment distribution on the tank bottom and the critical impeller speed for offbottom suspension. The CFD simulation was performed using the Eulerian-Eulerian two-phase approach, the standard k-ε turbulence model and the multiple reference frame (MRF) approach. The predicted critical impeller speeds were compared with the experimental data to validate the CFD model. The effects of the solid loading and some installation parameters including inclined angles of the impeller, plunging length and mounting height of the shaft on the critical impeller speed were investigated. The predicted results showed reasonably good agreement with the experimental data for both the distribution of solid accumulation and critical impeller speeds. The solid loading has a greater influence on the critical impeller speed in the side-entering stirred tank than that in the top-entering tank. On the basis of the CFD simulation determined critical impeller speeds under different conditions, the above installation parameters of the agitator were optimized. The results and discussion here will have useful implications for design and optimization of the solid-liquid suspension in side-entering stirred tanks.
