Impedance spectroscopy study of gadolinia-doped ceria

Abstract: Abstract. The electrical properties of Gdo.lCeo.901.95 were investigated in various gas atmospheres using a.c. impedance spectroscopy. In dry oxygen, impedance spectra consisted of two arcs at low temperatures corresponding to bulk and grain boundary behaviour, respectively, and only one arc at high temperatures (T > 550 ~The results showed a high oxygen ion conductivity in oxygen atmosphere more than 10 -2 S/cm at 600 ~ In water atmospheres, the bulk arc in dry oxygen was reduced by 30 %, and an additional ar… Show more

“…S3), the high-frequency (HF) process R 1 , with peak frequency ranging within 50-8000 Hz, shows an asymmetrical shape, a small resistance contribution and negligible temperature dependence over the range 600-800°C. In the work of Zhu et al, such a high-frequency process appeared only when certain metal current collectors were applied [73], while Oh and Haile [57] and Nielsen et al [56] suggest that this HF feature could represent the interfacial resistance between CGO and YSZ.…”

“…The high frequency (HF) process R1 at 8000-50hz shows an asymmetrical feature, it shows a strong dependence on temperature changing from 600-700°C, the resistance value is 0.039, 0.065, 0.08 Ωcm 2 at 600°C, 700°C and 800°C, respectively. According to literatures, it appeared only when certain metal current collector was applied (31), also other literatures suggests it shows the interfacial resistance of CGO scaffold and YSZ electrolyte (32). Therefore, can generally be attributed to the contact resistance caused by electrical constriction between current collector and electrodes or electrodes and electrolyte.…”

“…The Ga doping in ceria gives the higher oxygen diffusion coefficient than ceria doped with other dopants such as Y, Sm, and La 22 . More importantly, evidences of proton conduction at temperature lower than 400 °C were also reported 23 24 25 26 . The mixed oxygen ion and proton-conducting property allows both the oxygen ions and protons to transfer into the GDC layer, and therefore it is likely to extend the water formation and evolution zone from the confined TPB lines ( Fig.…”
