Impedance Spectroscopy of Self-Assembled Monolayers on Au(111):  Evidence for Complex Double-Layer Structure in Aqueous NaClO4 at the Potential of Zero Charge

Abstract: The impedance of a Au(111) electrode modified by three different self-assembled monolayers has been studied over a wide frequency range in aqueous NaClO4 solutions. The impedance characteristics of the bare electrode are compared with those of the same electrode modified with decanethiol, ω-hydroxydecanethiol, and 4‘-hydroxy-4-mercaptobiphenyl. In the case of the decanethiol system the interfacial impedance can be represented as a capacitor due to the self-assembled monolayer in series with the solution resist… Show more

“…A second strength of EIS lies in the ability to model physical processes using equivalent circuitry. In this way, more complex electrode mechanisms, electrodes that exhibit non uniform behavior across their surface and other novel phenomenon can be studied [89,[111][112][113][114]. There are also many other AC techniques [4,108].…”

“…23,24 The area illuminated by the laser can be derived by multiplying the area of the laser spot with the roughness factor of the electrode. The focus of the laser at 514 nm using a 20Â objective has been determined previously to be 2 mm 2,5 resulting in an illuminated area of A 0 = 18.1 mm 2 .…”

“…The sigmoidal shapes seen in this region may be attributable to the softness of the organic materials: subject to electrostatic force, slow conformational rearrangements may allow increased capacitance on longer timescales, causing the curve to droop slightly.
