A subsynchronous oscillation (SSO) phenomenon in a wind farm integrated with a modular multilevel converter (MMC)-based high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system has been recently observed in the real world. An attempt is made in this paper to contribute to the understanding of the root cause of the SSO in the MMC-HVDC connected wind farms by the impedance-based analysis. For that, the small-signal impedance model of the MMC is first developed based on the harmonic state-space (HSS) modelling method, which is able to include all the internal harmonic dynamics of MMC. An inherent low-frequency resonance peak in the MMC system excluding any control influence is identified by its terminal impedance characteristics. Arguably, this could be the reason why the SSO phenomenon occurs in the MMC-HVDC connected wind farms. In addition to that, the influence factors, such as main circuit parameters, controller parameters, and power level, on the stability of the interconnected system are examined by the impedance-based Nyquist plots, which can provide guidelines for the system design in order to guarantee the stability of the interconnected system. Based on the mechanism analysis, a stabilization control method for suppressing the SSO in the MMC-HVDC based wind farms is also proposed. Finally, the theoretical analysis and stabilization control method are validated by both time-domain simulations and on-site recorded waveforms in a real MMC-HVDC system for wind farm integration in China.

Abstract-Small-signal analysis of power electronic converters and systems is often carried out by impedance-based methods. At the core of these methods lies the impedance modelling, which can either be obtained through analytical calculations, simulations or measurements. The impedance models can be obtained into two main domains -the dq-domain and the sequence domain. In the dq-domain the impedance model is a 2x2 matrix, while in the sequence domain it is composed by the positive and negative sequence impedance. Recently, a third domain called the modified sequence domain was defined as an extension to the sequence domain, but also with clear similarities to the dq-domain. The objective of this paper is to unambiguously relate to each other the impedances in these three domains, and to show how this equivalence translates into their respective stability assessments. It is also proven that the sequence domain impedance has the same marginal stability condition as the dq-domain impedance matrix.The three-phase Voltage Source Converter is used as an example converter in this paper, as its impedance model in all three domains is well established and reported by previous research. The results in this paper shows that the modified sequence domain model can be derived from the dq-domain model (and vice versa), and that the stability analysis will be identical in these two domains. It is also shown how the original sequence domain model can be derived from the two other models through a model reduction. However, a small discrepancy between the two Nyquist plots is observed in the presence of components such as phase lock loop or DC-link control.

The Nyquist stability criterion is a graphical technique for determining the stability of a dynamical system. It relates the stability of a closed‐loop system to the open‐loop frequency response and open‐loop pole location. The Nyquist technique is limited to linear, time‐invariant (LTI) systems and has been widely used for designing and analyzing systems with feedback. A practical advantage of the technique is that it can be applied directly to measured frequency response data, due to which the technique is widely used in power electronics systems, where the complexity of a mathematical model would make its widespread use unfeasible. In its first part, this article guides through the fundamentals of the Nyquist stability criterion applied to feedback systems with SISO and MIMO representations. The generalized Nyquist criterion for MIMO systems is then discussed to illustrate its application to the stability assessment of three‐phase power electronics systems. In the second part, four representative cases are introduced to illustrate the applicability of Nyquist criterion–based stability analysis for power electronics systems: a dc‐dc converter, an HVDC system, a three‐phase converter, and a wind farm–HVDC grid integrated system. In the last section of this article, some advanced topics related to large‐scale power electronics systems are introduced. Inherent aspects that are essential for the proper use of these stability techniques are elaborated and discussed in detail, for instance, impedance transformation and modified sequence impedance or the system‐level analysis.
