“…It has been shown that, activation of opioid system is implicated in the mechanisms underlying the effect of antidepressants (Devoize et al, 1984;Tejedor-Real et al, 1995). In addition, the serotonergic and the endogenous opioid systems have been suggested to be involved in the etiopathogenesis of depression and in the mechanism of action of antidepressant drugs (Zangen et al, 2002;Kennedy et al, 2006). Navinés and co-workers claimed that the changes in interaction between 5-HT1A receptors and the endogenous opioid systems might play role in the mechanism of antidepressant drug action (Navinés et al, 2008).…”

“…These effects can be due to the elevation of the serotonin levels in consequence of the selective inhibition of its reuptake (Bansal-Rajbanshi & Mathur, 1985). Local application of serotonin (5-HT) or fluoxetine in the nuclei accumbens and arcuato promotes local liberation of b-endorphin, demonstrating that the mechanism of action of SSRI and tricyclic antidepressants involves the serotoninergic modulation of the system of endogenous opioids (Zagen et al, 2002). It is probable that the elevation of the serotonin levels in the neonates might have altered the levels of opioid peptides, mainly the one of b-endorphin in the hypothalamus (Gilmore, 1995).…”

“…Similarly, a blunted enkephalin release was found after exposing chronic mild stressed animals to a conspecies (Bertrand et al, 1997). These and other studies led to the conclusion that depressive behaviors, especially anhedonia, may be related to the reduced levels or responsiveness of enkephalin neurotransmission in the nucleus accumbens (Zangen et al, 2002). However, in contrast to these findings there was an increased enkephalin immunoreactivity in limbic structures (Primeaux and Holmes, 2000) and ventral striatum, but not in the nucleus accumbens (Holmes, 1999) in the bulbectomy model of depression.…”
