“…In fact, the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for SUDs were the starting point for the development of such behavioural addictions including IGD [3]. Common features of substance and non-substance addictions include (i) the multifactorial aetiology, in which premorbid personality and genetic factors (both still under study for problematic gaming) play important roles [87]; (ii) the psychological features of addiction in general, especially the tendency to socially withdraw, mood modification, and tolerance [79]; (iii) the reward dysregulation system which has been widely documented among participants with SUDs and recently suggested among people with IGD, with studies proposing an altered regulation of craving as a transdiagnostic construct for both SUDs and behavioural addictions [88]; and (iv) the neurobiological and neurofunctional dysregulations that both individuals with SUDs and problematic gamers have. According to a recent meta-analysis, the dysregulations of the prefrontal region are predominant in both disorders [89].…”

“…Another emerging form of potential treatment for PUI involves noninvasive neurostimulation, using techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation [276] and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). These techniques are thought to mediate their effect in PUI via stimulation of cortical brain cells and modification of their related functions [232,233], thereby increasing cognitive control and better regulation of craving and emotions [234][235][236][237][238]. Of the available techniques, tDCS is relatively safe, simple, and inexpensive to administer and can be provided remotely; thus, it may be particularly suited for delivery to large populations.…”
