Impaired gastric motility and its relationship to gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with chronic renal failure

Abstract: The patients with CRF showed gastric hypomotility, including impaired gastric myoelectrical activity and delayed gastric emptying. Gastric hypomotility appears to be an important factor in the generation of GI symptoms in patients with CRF.

“…We have previously reported (Hirako et al, 2005) that patients with predialysis end-stage renal disease with severe uremia showed a significanty lower percentage of normogastria in the postprandial states and a lower power ratio in EGGs with delayed gastric emptying compared with healthy controls. In this study, we measured gastric motility in CRF patients undergoing hemodialysis for more than six months to evaluate the effect of maintenance dialysis, and we found no differences in the parameters of gastric motility between these patients and healthy controls.…”

“…During the gavage studies, it was noted that the stomachs were enlarged in mice treated with adenine. While it had been previously reported that CKD could alter gastrointestinal motility [33], there was no mention in the animal literature of enlarged stomachs [8,13,14]. The significant enlargement of the stomach caused by adenine supplementation suggested that adenine use in the mouse model might compromise oral administration of test therapies.…”

“…6,8,9 Delayed gastric emptying could influence functional gastrointestinal disorders including gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease and functional dyspepsia. [10][11][12] Mosapride is a selective 5-hydroxytryptamine type 4 (5-HT 4 ) receptor agonist and has been used in patients with upper gastrointestinal disorders by shortening gastric emptying in healthy volunteers and gastroparesis. 13,14 Gastrin and cholecystokinin (CCK) are homologous gastrointestinal endocrine hormones which are known to regulate gastric acid secretion, gastric emptying, growth of gastric mucosa and intestinal motility in upper gastrointestinal tract.…”
