“…Lymphocytotoxic antibodies could not be incriminated in the majority. One obvious possible cause of depressed CMI in coeliac disease is the nutritional deficiency conse- quent upon the malabsorption, as CMI is known to be depressed in severe malnutrition (Geefhuysen et al, 1971;Smythe et al, 1971). However, in this study no correlation was found between general nutritional status or deficiency of individual nutrients and the results of lymphocyte transformation.…”

One obvious possible cause of depressed CMI in coeliac disease is the nutritional deficiency conse- quent upon the malabsorption, as CMI is known to be depressed in severe malnutrition (Geefhuysen et al, 1971;Smythe et al, 1971 (Waldmann et al, 1972). Although T-cell counts were not performed in this study, reduction in peripheral blood T-cells is unlikely wholly to explain the findings, as the reported magnitude of reduction of T-cell numbers in untreated coeliac disease (O'Donoghue et al, 1975) is considerably less than the magnitude of depression of lymphocyte transformation observed in many of the patients of this study.…”

“…While impaired lymphocyte reactions can be acquired with marasmus (Geefhuysen et al, 1971) complete abrogation is unrecorded. The appearance of some detectable serum IgM is also recorded in several other patients with combined immune deficiency (Hobbs, 1969) as is the late onset.…”

“…The mechanism by which such large numbers of Candida become established in malnourished children is not clear. Previous studies have shown the ability of such children to secrete intestinal immunoglobulins to be unimpaired (Bell et al, 1976), while depression of cell-mediated immunity in vivo and in vitro has been reported in malnutrition (Geefhuysen et al, 1971;Chandra, 1972;Ferguson et al, 1974). However Kulapongs et al (1974) found lymphocyte responsiveness to phytohaemagglutinin and killing ability of polymorphs to be normal in a group of malnourished children with iron deficiency, while Macdougall et al (1975) found cell-mediated immunity was impaired in such children.…”
