Impaired canine coronary vasodilator response to acetylcholine and bradykinin after occlusion-reperfusion.

Abstract: Previous studies indicate impairment of coronary arterial ring relaxation in response to acetylcholine (ACh) following coronary reperfusion, mediated via loss of endothelium-derived relaxing factor (EDRF). To examine if coronary vasodilator reserve is reduced following coronary ocdusionreperfusion in intact animnk, 16 open-chest mongrel dogs were subjected to 1 hour of total left circumflex (Cx) coronary artery ocduskm followed by reperfusion for 1 hour. Prior to Cx occlusion, coronary blood flow increased and… Show more

“…Ischemia causes vascular injury with attendant dysfunction in conductance and resistance vessels (22)(23)(24); resultant vascular incompetence impairs the ability of the heart to respond to recurrent ischemic episodes (25,26). Animal studies (27)(28)(29)(30) have shown both antinecrosis and antiarrhythmic effects with a host of pharmacological agents that modulate different intraand extracellular mechanisms.…”

“…18 Although peripheral neutrophil activation has been shown to correlate with the severity of ischemic heart disease in humans in one study,19 very little is known about the functional characteristics of neutrophils in patients with ischemic heart disease. In our study, we examine several aspects of neutrophil function to determine neutrophil activity in various forms of ischemic heart disease.…”
