Extreme weather events such as tropical storms and hurricanes deliver large amounts of freshwater (stormwater and river discharge) and associated dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to estuaries and the coastal ocean, affecting water quality, and carbon budgets. Hurricane Harvey produced an unprecedented 1000-year flood event in 2017 that inundated the heavily urbanized and industrialized Houston/Galveston region (TX, United States). Within a week, storm-associated floodwater delivered 87 ± 18 Gg of terrigenous dissolved organic carbon (tDOC) to Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico continental shelves. In situ decay constants of 8. 75-28.33 year −1 resulted in the biomineralization of ∼70% of tDOC within 1 month of discharge from the flood plain. The high removal efficiency of tDOC was linked to a diverse microbial community capable of degrading a wide repertoire of dissolved organic matter (DOM), and suggested hurricane-induced flood events affect net CO 2 exchange and nutrient budgets in estuarine watersheds and coastal seas.

In nature-based treatment systems, such as constructed wetlands, plant uptake of nutrients can be a significant removal pathway. Current methods for quantifying plant uptake of nitrogen in constructed wetlands, which often involve harvesting biomass and assuming that all nitrogen stored in plants was derived from wastewater, are inappropriate in pilot- and full-scale systems where other sources of nitrogen are available. To improve our understanding of nitrogen cycling in constructed wetlands, we developed a new method to quantify plant uptake of nitrogen by using stable isotopes and a mixing model to distinguish between nitrogen sources. We applied this new method to a pilot-scale horizontal levee system (i.e., a subsurface constructed wetland) over a two-year monitoring period, during which 14% of nitrogen in plants was wastewater-derived on average and the remaining plant nitrogen was obtained from the soil. Analysis of nitrogen isotopes indicated substantial spatial variability in the wetland: 82% of nitrogen in plants within the first 2 m of the slope came from wastewater while less than 12% of plant nitrogen in the remainder of the wetland originated from wastewater. By combining these source contributions with remote-sensing derived total biomass measurements, we calculated that 150 kg N (95% CI = 50 kg N, 330 kg N) was taken up and retained by plants during the two-year monitoring period, which corresponded to approximately 8% of nitrogen removed in the wetland. Nitrogen uptake followed seasonal trends, increased as plants matured, and varied based on design parameters (e.g., plant types), suggesting that design decisions can impact this removal pathway. This new method can help inform efforts to understand nitrogen cycling and optimize the design of nature-based nutrient control systems.

How to advance new urbanization initiatives and reduce the water footprint of industries is one urgent issue about urbanization that needs to be resolved. Based on spatial dynamic panel data, we used the system GMM (Generalized Method of Moments) to study the impact of urbanization on the industrial water footprint. The results show that, overall, urbanization increases the industrial water footprint, industrial virtual water footprint, and industrial gray water footprint in China. There are sectoral and regional differences in the impact of urbanization. Specifically, urbanization reduces the agricultural water footprint and agricultural virtual water footprint but raises the agricultural gray water footprint. Urbanization increases the manufacturing water footprint, manufacturing virtual water footprint, and gray water footprint. Urbanization reduces the virtual water footprint of the service industry but increases the water footprint and gray water footprint in the service industry. At the regional level, urbanization increases the industrial water footprint and gray water footprint across the three major regions. In the eastern region, urbanization has little effect on increasing the industrial water footprint, and reduces the industrial virtual water footprint, whereas in the central and western regions urbanization increases the industrial virtual water footprint. In all three regions, urbanization reduces the agricultural water footprint, increases the manufacturing and service water footprints, reduces the virtual water footprints of agriculture and services, and increases the gray water footprint of agriculture, manufacturing, and services. In the eastern region, the reducing effect of urbanization is the greatest and the increasing effect of urbanization is the smallest. Additionally, in the eastern region, urbanization has reduced the virtual water footprint of manufacturing, whereas in the central and western regions urbanization has increased the virtual water footprint of manufacturing.Sustainability 2020, 12, 2263 157 consumption, and the per capita water consumption of 15 provinces was higher than the national 158 average.
