Impacts of Urban Green Space on Land Surface Temperature from Urban Block Perspectives

Abstract: Urban green space (UGS) can be regarded as an effective approach to mitigate urban heat island (UHI) effects. Many studies have investigated the impacts of composition and configuration of UGS on land surface temperature (LST), while little attention has been paid to the impacts among different urban blocks. Thus, taking 1835 urban blocks in Beijing as samples, including low-rise point (LRP), low-rise street (LRS), low-rise block (LRB), mid-rise point (MRP), mid-rise street (MRS), mid-rise block (MRB), high-ri… Show more

“…The landscape pattern in different parks can also provide various degrees of influence on LST. As previous studies mentioned in the suggestions for urban management before, increasing perimeter, area [ 38 , 100 ], morphological complexity [ 15 ], landscape diversity, and plant community diversity within some parks can reduce surface temperature [ 47 , 89 ], which is the same as our proposal. It is worth noting that Our work summarized some particular transformation models for parks with low cooling impacts by restructuring the landscape, modifying the size and position of landscape types, adjusting the patch density and park layout, etc.…”

“…Increasing the quantity of vegetation is thus the principal focus of the park’s rehabilitation [ 99 ]. Reducing the proportion of impervious and bare land in the parks [ 50 , 100 ], bolstering the planting of vegetation on the bare surface, and making the sparse vegetation gradually dense through vegetation maintenance may be an effective way that is less noticed by previous studies.…”

“…Urban blue-green infrastructure is an important part of urban infrastructure [58][59][60], which includes water systems, greenways, wetlands, and forests. It is a crucial aspect affecting the thermal environment of the city, influencing urban spatial layout, and increasing urban resilience [61,62]. Although the index system we constructed includes some blue-green infrastructure because cities at the prefecture level and above include different provinces and regions with different natural, economic, and social development conditions and obvious development differentiation, data on certain blue-green infrastructure indicators are difficult to obtain for most cities at the municipal scale.…”

“…In addition, the data on the administrative divisions of China's prefecture-level cities used to produce the thematic maps came from the Data Center for Resources and Environmental Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences(RESDC). Some scholars used the architectural data, meteorological data and GF1 images provided by this database to study the influence of different urban forms on urban surface temperature in Beijing and Guangzhou [22][23][24]. The above articles provide good data source and method basis for the work of map editing and data analysis in this paper.…”
