This study investigates the impact of the sea surface temperature (SST) on the forecast of two typhoons, which consecutively hit South Korea in 2020. SST data were obtained from the Daily Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST) version 2 and HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model/Navy Coupled Ocean Data Assimilation (HYCOM/NCODA; GLBy0.08/expt_93.0). When verified using in situ observational data, the OISST data did not accurately estimate the changes in SST during each typhoon’s landfall period compared to the HYCOM data since it has a relatively low temporal resolution. To investigate the impact of these two SST data on typhoon forecasts, we conducted sensitivity experiments using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. The results showed that simulated typhoon intensities were significantly improved in the simulations with HYCOM data (HY runs), while typhoon track forecast performances were similar in both runs. In addition, the forecast performances of the maximum wind speed at 10 m during the typhoon landfall period were improved in the HY runs. Therefore, this study showed that the overall typhoon intensity and forecast performances during the landfall period could be improved when the higher temporal-resolution SST data were prescribed in the model boundary conditions for a better representation of typhoon-induced SST changes.

Upwelling is a process by which deep, colder, higher-nutrient waters are brought to the sea surface. In the tropics, an indicator that an upwelling event has occurred is lowering of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) to 25°–27°C from a mean of ~28°C. Based on more than one year of in situ data, we observed an unusual extreme upwelling event (EUE) when the near-surface temperature (NST) dropped by 10°C within one hour during the spring tide in Mulut Kumbang Strait of Alor Kecil. The extreme minimum NST during this EUE was ~12°C, and the upward displacement speed of the cold water was ~0.012 m s–1. The increase in salinity from ~30‰ to 34‰–36 ‰ during the decrease in NST indicates a deep source for the cold water mass . From bathymetry and CTD data, the source of the cold water mass was a deep basin (>300 m) located at the southern part of Pantar Strait. In this basin, the temperature at 270 m depth can be as low as 8°C. We suggest that tidal sloshing (i.e., the back-and-forth movement of water) brings the cold water mass through a channel that connects this deep basin to Mulut Kumbang Strait. Interactions between semi-diurnal (M2, S2, and N2) tidal components strongly modulate the tidal signal with a period of nearly one month. That EUEs only occur from August to November also suggests a strong monsoonal influence. Because tides are predictable, we suggest that future EUEs are predictable.

The Jason-3 Satellite Altimetry has two main instruments: the Poseidon-3B Altimeter and the Advanced Microwave Radiometer. The two sensors produce many output data. Satellite altimetry data commonly used to observe TC are Sea Level Anomaly (SLA) and Significant Wave Height (SWH). This research tries something new by adding three other data, namely Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV), Liquid Water Content (LWC), and Wind Speed (WS). The object of this research is TC Seroja which occurred from 2 to 12 April 2021. This research was conducted to obtain all variable’s spatial and temporal profiles. The results of this study indicate that TC Seroja causes an increase in SLA, PWV, SWH, LWC, and WS. The highest SLA was 0.495 m, SWH was 4.649 m, PWV was 0.10760 m, LWC was 2.08 kg/m2, and WS was 18.42 m/s. In addition, the spatial model for the five variables in April 2021 obtained using IDW (Inverse Distance Weighting) can also provide information on the influence of TC in various places.
