Impacts of the invasive exotic Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) D.C. on the native flora and soils of the UAE

Abstract: The effects of the invasive exotic Prosopis juliflora shrubs on the natural plant communities and soil chemical characters were assessed in two regions of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Five sites were selected subjectively: three in Sharja with 73 stands and two in Ras Al-Khima with 37 stands. Stands were located randomly within each site to cover density variation in Sharja and size variation in Ras Al-Khima. Density, frequency, richness and evenness of the associated annual and perennial species were studi… Show more

“…Prosopis juliflora (mesquite), a native of Central and South America, has rapidly extended its global range and eliminates native residents in the invaded range. P. juliflora is a fast-growing tree species which resprouts easily, and has a strong adverse impact on native flora and soil properties (Sharma and Dakshini 1998;El-Keblawy and Al-Rawai 2007). Also, the leaf leachates and extracts of P. juliflora show allelopathic effects against native species in its invaded range but extracts from leaves of P. cineraria, a native of the Indian subcontinent, collected and applied in the same way, do not (Goel et al 1989).…”

“…Competition is considered as one of the major forces determining the distribution and abundance of plant species and the composition and structure of plant communities (Gopal & Goel, 1993;Tilman, 2000). When induced by exotic species, competition can influence plant communities by affecting species composition, densities, diversity, and richness (Bazzaz, 1990;El-Keblawy & Al-Rawal, 2007). Competition between plants mainly occurs for resources such as nutrients, light, water, space, and CO 2 .…”
