Impacts of sun protection and skin care habits in the biophysical and morphological properties of young men skin

Abstract

People that are frequently exposed to environmental factors such as pollution and excessive sun radiation may suffer relevant increase in the skin aging process, 1 being the UV light is the one of the main causes of the extrinsic age, known as photoaging. In this case, some structural alterations as damages in the collagen fibers and in its viscoelastic characteristics can be observed. 2,3 Thus, it can affect the barrier function since the UVB rays are responsible for inducing inflammatory responses from the skin's top layers and as unprotected skin can lead to solar hyperkeratosis of the stratum corneum (SC). This process is a physiologic response to the external aggressions, as the thickened SC also leads to a stronger light scattering. 4 One of the most important functions of the skin is to form an effective barrier between the "inside" and the "outside" of the organism, being an important indicator of its health conditions, reflecting the balance between the lipid content and SC hydration. 5 The skin is also involved in the regulation of water release from the organism into the atmosphere, known as transepidermal water loss (TEWL).Alterations on TEWL parameters are an indicative of the skin barrier
