SandÀgravel mining is a significant parameter of economic development and social welfare function in modern societies. As demand for aggregate increases in construction industry, conflicts for the availability of the resource and environmental impacts become more intense. The present paper describes the contested status quo in riverbed sandÀgravel mining activities with an example from Greece, as a case study. The scope is to propose a methodology about good governance of the mining sector that promotes a sustainable sharing of aggregate resource by securing environment and safekeeping revenues in the mining trade market.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge crosses the Pearl River Estuary and is the largest bridge and tunnel project in the world. During the construction period of this project, the excessive suspended sediment was found in the construction region. The suspended sediment generated by sand excavation in the upstream was assumed to have a significant impact on the suspended sediment in the tunnel region. In this study, we assessed the impact of upstream sand excavation on the suspended sediment in the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge construction area using Landsat OLI, ETM+, and TM data. Regional suspended sediment algorithms were developed for Landsat using a symbolic regression method based on data from in situ measurements in the study area from 2003 to 2014. A band shift was conducted on the remote sensing reflectance data from Landsat ETM+ and OLI to produce a time series of the suspended sediment concentrations that was internally consistent with that of the Landsat TM data. The suspended sediment distribution was extracted and used to compare under two different conditions, with and without sand excavation. The correlations of the time series of the suspended sediment concentrations in different regions in the surrounding waters, including the correlations between the construction regions and the sand excavation regions, were calculated. Our results indicated that the sand excavation north of the Pearl River Estuary had a limited impact on the surface suspended sediment concentrations in the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge tunnel area.

The research aims to increase the performance efficiency of hydromechanization equipment under the conditions of pit operation of the Motronivskyi Mining and Concentrating Plant by determining the dynamics of change in the water level in the mine workings when developing the overburden rocks and mineral. It has been generalized the world experience of determining the groundwater inflows into mine workings, which are mined by means of hydromechanization equipment. The methods have been developed for calculating the underground water inflow into the pit reservoir, when mining the placer ores by hydromechanization equipment. It has been proved that the dredger work in the conditions of the Motronivskyi MCP pit is possible without external source of water supply. The research results in determining the influence of underwater mining of overburden rocks and ore by dredger for decreasing the water level and its subsequent recovery in the reservoir of the Motronivskyi MCP pit, allow to develop a mode of mining operations without an external source of water supply. The dynamics of water level fluctuations in mine working during the working week have been established. The research results have shown that the dredger, taking into account the technical characteristics, can continuously operate for 9.5 days under the conditions of underground water inflow into the Motronivskyi MPP pit. It has also been established that after the dredging of the overburden rocks is stopped, the level of water in the pit for 2.5 days will recover.
