Impacts of packet scheduling and packet loss distribution on FEC Performances

Abstract: Forward Error Correction (FEC) is commonly used for content broadcasting. The performance of the FEC codes largely vary, depending in particular on the code used and on the object size, and these parameters have already been studied in detail by the community. However the FEC performances are also largely dependent on the packet scheduling used during transmission and on the loss pattern introduced by the channel. Little attention has been devoted to these aspects so far. Therefore the present paper analyzes t… Show more

“…• Burst or sequence of losses The channel loss process of such network causes has been modeled in literature by several common models such as the Poisson model, Gilbert model, and Bernoulli model [7,8]. We carried out the analysis of communication channels that produce this mixture of losses using these different common packet loss models.…”

“…It is worth noting that, when the Gilbert channel loss model [6,7,8] is used to simulate packet loss, there are two states need to be analyzed in our study which are: the good or no-loss state where no packet loss occurs (State 1), and the loss state where packets are lost (State 0). In any of these states the channel is, the loss occurs following an independent and identical distribution (iid) model [10].…”
