Impacts of Oxidative Stress and Antioxidants on Semen Functions

Abstract: Oxidative stress (OS) has been considered a major contributory factor to the infertility. Oxidative stress is the result of imbalance between the reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidants in the body which can lead to sperm damage, deformity, and eventually male infertility. Although high concentrations of the ROS cause sperm pathology (ATP depletion) leading to insufficient axonemal phosphorylation, lipid peroxidation, and loss of motility and viability but, many evidences demonstrate that low and contr… Show more

“…Our sperm samples were fresh ejaculates, so the conditions causing the defect must be related to the physiology of the male. Several factors are known to induce premature acrosome reaction in birds and mammals, including mutations [19], extracellular calcium and lead [20,21], and oxidative stress [22]. Interestingly, a link between oxidative stress and poor sperm performance has already been indicated in barn swallows from Chernobyl [11,23], so rsbl.royalsocietypublishing.org Biol Lett 9: 20130530 we speculate that premature acrosome reaction is caused by oxidative stress and accelerated sperm senescence [24].…”

“…The toxicity of ROS is responsible for several cellular alterations (Soares et al, 2014) also, productions of ROS decrease sperm motility (Ogbuewu et al, 2010). Because of lipid peroxidation, the plasma membrane decrease fluidity and integrity (Bansal and Bilaspuri, 2010).…”

“…However, oxidative stress has been associated with male infertility (Bansal and Bilaspuri, 2010;El-Tohamy, 2012). The toxicity of ROS is responsible for several cellular alterations (Soares et al, 2014) also, productions of ROS decrease sperm motility (Ogbuewu et al, 2010).…”

“…However, the high performance of GPx activity depends on several factors, including its biodisponibility, levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) and presence of selenium, an important component of GPx active site (Jurkovic et al, 2008). If the GPx system is exhausted and becomes unable to purge the H 2 O 2 produced, the excess of this ROS may react with polyunsaturated fatty acids present in the sperm membrane, inducing lipid peroxidation (Morliere & Santus, 1998;Bansal & Bilaspuri, 2010). Furthermore, the remaining H 2 O 2 in the presence of transition metals, can be converted by the Fenton reaction in hydroxyl radical (Gutteridge, 1986;Denisov & Afanas'ev, 2005), considered an unstable ROS and thus mainly responsible for oxidative damage to biomolecules (i.e., proteins, lipids, DNA) (Aprioku, 2013;Meyerstein, 2013).…”
