“…The higher microbial counts in this study may attribute due to the presence of perforations on MAP which provide means of entrance for microorganisms during storage. The previous researchers reported that the MP pomegranate arils packed under MAP in super atmospheric O 2 (Ayhan & Esturk, ; Banda et al, ; Belay et al, ) and 100 kPa N 2 atmosphere significantly showed lower aerobic mesophilic bacteria counts throughout the storage duration. In addition to MAP, Aloe vera gel (Martinez‐Romero et al, ), chitosan coating (Ghasemnezhad et al, ; Ozdemir & Gokmen, ), and UV‐C + Hot Water + High oxygen packaging (Maghoumi et al, ) also showed potential to reduce microbial spoilage of MP pomegranate arils.…”

“…The storage temperature, time, and their interaction showed a nonsignificant effect on aril firmness during the storage period of 14 days (Caleb, Opara, et al, ). Packaging conditions (passive and active MAP) also showed a nonsignificant effect on aril firmness (Ayhan & Esturk, ; Belay, Caleb, & Opara, ). These authors also reported the highest firmness of arils stored under super atmospheric conditions.…”

“…Recent research has shown that high O 2 atmosphere could inhibit microbial growth and enzymatic browning (Jacxsens, Devlieghere, Steen, & Debevere, ). Super O 2 modified atmosphere storage maintained lower microbial counts and higher amount of volatile compounds of pomegranates arils than that of low O 2 and air modified atmosphere storage (Belay, Caleb, & Opara, ).…”
