Dryland ecosystem services (ESs) have been severely harmed by global environmental changes and increased human activities. To improve ESs, it is necessary to understand how they interact in drylands. In this study, we selected Ordos dryland, which is situated in northern China, as the study area to assess its four key ESs—food supply (FS), carbon storage (CS), water yield (WY), and habitat quality (HQ)—and to identify the hotspots of multiple ES supply. Furthermore, we studied the constraint effects between ESs in Ordos in 2000, 2010, and 2020 and used a spatial trade-off model to map the trade-off and synergy areas of ESs from 2000 to 2010 and from 2010 to 2020. The results indicated that all four ESs in Ordos increased significantly over the study period. The hotspots for the supply of multiple ESs also increased in areal extent during this period, and the state of the regional ecological environment continued to improve. The constraint effect between ESs showed that as the CS increased, its constraint effect on WY and FS decreased and then increased, whereas its constraint effect on HQ only decreased; as the WY increased, its constraint effect on HQ decreased and then increased, and its constraint effect on FS continued to decrease; as the FS increased, its constraint effect on HQ continued to increase. From the change in the area of ESs trade-offs and synergies, there was an increase in the area of positive synergy for four pairs of ESs in Ordos, which were CS-WY, CS-HQ, WY-HQ, and FS-HQ. These findings help in establishing a scientific foundation for the management and optimization of ESs in drylands.

Land use change drives the process of urban pattern change. The development of urbanization will lead to the reduction of ecological land and the disappearance of ecological defense. Foshan is such a typical city. It is important to reveal the characteristics of dynamic land use changes and predict the future land use pattern. In this study, land use transfer matrix, standard deviation ellipse model, and center of gravity model were applied. Three representative years, 2010, 2015 and 2020, are used to analyze the characteristics of land use type, quantity change, and center of gravity structure change in Foshan City. Then, based on the FLUS model and Markov model, the land use data for 2015 and 2020 and a series of driving factors were used to simulate the land use of Foshan City in 2025 in multiple scenarios. The results show that: (i) from the time scale, the study area from 2010 to 2020 shows a trend of continuous increase of construction land and continuous decrease of ecological land; the fragmentation of ecological lands such as cultivated land, forest land, and grassland in Foshan with the time change is serious, and urban land patches are obviously increased. (ii) From the spatial scale analysis, it is found that the center of gravity of construction land shifts to the east, the center of gravity of forest land shifts to the northwest, and the center of gravity of cultivated land shifts to the southeast, and the center of gravity of water shifts to the east. (iii) According to the results of the Foshan City 2025 land use simulation, the overall urban land use pattern shows an eastward "core-edge" growth pattern. This study provides a reference for the sustainable development and scientific and rational planning of land use in Foshan City.

Intensity analysis has generally been applied as a top-bottom hierarchical accounting method to understand regional dynamic characteristics of land use and land cover (LULC) change. Given the inconvenience of transition level in the detailed and overall presentation of various category transitions at multiple intervals, a novel transition pattern is proposed to represent the transition’s size and intensity and to intuitively identify the stationary mode of transition, which helps the transition level to connect to the mode with the process. An intensity analysis was conducted to communicate the transition between LULC categories in Hengyang from 1980 to 2015. The patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model was employed for multi-scenario projection from 2015 to 2045. From 1980 to 2015, 2005 was a significant turning point in the speed of LULC change in Hengyang, and the change rate after this time point was three times that before the time point. The gain of built-up and bare, and the loss of cultivated was always active. The reason for the large loss of forest is that forest comprises the largest proportion of Hengyang. The loss of cultivated and the loss of forest contributing to the built-up’s gain is much larger, but the mechanism behind the transition differed. A stationary targeting transition mode from cultivated to built-up in Hengyang was detected. The PLUS model confirmed that the area of forest, cultivated and grass will reduce, and the rate of decrease will slow down in the future, while water areas will slightly increase. Our work enriches the methodology of intensity analysis and provides a scientific reference for the sustainable development and management of land resources in Hengyang.
