Impacts of land use and planning on island ecosystem service values: a case study of Dinghai District on Zhoushan Archipelago, China

Abstract: Recently designated as a new special economic zone in China, Zhoushan Archipelago is going through a rapid land use change that is expected to have significant impacts on ecosystem services. However, there is no baseline of ecosystem service value (ESV) of the Zhoushan Archipelago up to date, making it impossible to assess any impacts of land use changes. In this study, we adopted the concept of "equivalent value per unit area of ecosystem services in China" and computed the ESV for 2006, 2012, and 2020 of a r… Show more

“…In recent years, the government acknowledged the importance of the development and utilization of marine resources in this area [15]. Zhoushan is focused on cultivating and developing marine industry as the center of marine economy development with the Zhoushan Archipelago New Area designated as a state-level economic reform pioneer zone in the national strategy [15,16]. The rapid development of the economy caused the increase in household and industrial waste that degrades the environment.…”

“…Population explosion and related infrastructure development are very common phenomena in urban area, which changes the LULC pattern (Gao et al, 2017). As a result, natural ecosystems are transformed to human-nature ecosystems, and destroy the ecosystem structureand functions (Shao et al, 2017;Wang et al, 2017). The environmental sustainability and regenerating capacity are under great threats due to loss of water bodies and vegetation cover within urban space (Keshtkar et al, 2017).…”

“…The research object of ESV can be a single landscape unit including forest [15], island [16], basin [17], and even an administrative scope, such as a specific city [18] or regions [19][20][21] of different scales. In 1997, Costanza [22] systematically assessed the functional value of global ecosystem services.…”
