Impacts of Kinetics Scheme Used To Simulate Toe-to-Heel Air Injection (THAI) in Situ Combustion Method for Heavy Oil Upgrading and Production

Abstract: While simulating toe-to-heel air injection (THAI), which is a variant of conventional in situ combustion that uses a horizontal producer well to recover mobilized partially upgraded heavy oil, the chemical kinetics is one of the main sources of uncertainty because the hydrocarbon must be represented by the use of oil pseudo-components. There is, however, no study comparing the predictive capability of the different kinetics schemes used to simulate the THAI process. From the literature, it was determined that … Show more

“…Both the thermal cracking and the combustion reactions follow Arrhenius relationship which is in accordance with previous studies (Abu et al, 2015; M.R. Ado, 2020aAdo, , 2020bAdo, , 2020cAdo, , 2020dCavallaro et al, 2008;Shah et al, 2011;Weissman et al, 1996;Weissman, 1997;Xia and Greaves, 2001;Xia et al, 2002). The rate law for the thermal cracking reaction is first order with respect to each reactant and first order overall.…”

“…The pressure, volume, and temperature properties of the Athabasca bitumen based on three oil pseudo-components and which are the same as those used and detailed in previous studies (M.R. However, the viscosity as function of temperature for the Athabasca bitumen as a whole is shown in Fig.…”

“…Peak temperature gives the measure of the vigorousness of the combustion front. It indicates the type of oxidation reaction that is dominant, namely low-temperature oxidation (LTO) or high-temperature oxidation (HTO) reaction (Ado, 2020d ). Generally, it can be seen that the peak temperatures of both models remain above 470 °C throughout the combustion period, implying that HTO is the dominant oxidation reaction that is taking place (Fig.…”

“…The Athabasca bitumen reservoir porosity, horizontal absolute permeability, absolute permeabilities ratio k h ∕k v , initial temperature and pressure, and initial oil, water, and gas saturations respectively as used in each model can be seen from Table 1. For more information about the selection of the laboratory-scale parameters which are validated against experimental results, see Rabiu Ado (2017) and Ado (2020d). The oil/water and gas/oil relative permeability curves as used in both models can be found in Rabiu Ado (2017) and Ado (2020d), and consequently, they are not repeated here in order to conserve space.…”
