This paper examines the impact of providing informal care to elderly parents on caregivers' subjective well-being using unique data from the "Preference Parameters Study" of Osaka University, a nationally representative survey conducted in Japan. The estimation results indicate heterogeneous effects: while informal elderly care does not have a significant impact on the happiness level of married caregivers regardless of whether they take care of their own parents or parents-in law and whether or not they reside with them, it has a negative and significant impact on the happiness level of unmarried caregivers who take care of their parents outside their home. These findings shed light on the important role that formal care services could play in reducing the burden on caregivers, particularly unmarried caregivers who presumably receive less support from family members.JEL codes: D10, I18, I31, J14

AbstrakPelaku rawat informal berisiko untuk mengalami stres berlebih dan koping maladaptif dalam merawat klien diabetes pada perawatan paliatif. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat stres dan strategi koping pelaku rawat informal dalam perawatan paliatif. Desain penelitian menggunakan cross sectional dengan melibatkan sebanyak adalah 40 pelaku rawat sebagai responden. Instrumen yang digunakan yaitu kuesioner PSS 14 items dan CSI-SF 32 items. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mayoritas pelaku rawat mengalami stres sedang (95%) dan koping yang sering digunakan adalah koping adaptif. Tidak ada hubungan antara tingkat stres dan karakeristik pelaku rawat informal (95% CI; p >0.05). Penelitian ini merekomendasikan penyedia jasa pelayanan paliatif untuk mengevaluasi pelayanan yang ada sehingga mengurangi stres dari para pelaku rawat informal dalam perawatan paliatif.

AbstractThis study analyzes the role of social capital in buffering the negative relationship between informal-care provision and mental health. Using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) and fixed-effect regression models, we show that those individuals who socialize more frequently enjoy better mental health. We also find that stronger social ties moderate the negative association between caregiving and mental well-being. The protective role of social capital appears to be particularly strong for caregivers with high time commitments or those who regularly perform voluntary work. The moderating role of social activities can neither be explained by the caregiver's observed characteristics correlated with social capital, nor by features of the caregiving process. However, the results might be driven by insufficient overlap in covariates between carers and non-carers, and the simultaneity between caring decisions and social activities.
