Impacts of Harmonic Voltage Distortions on the Dynamic Behavior and the PRPD Patterns of Partial Discharges in an Air Cavity Inside a Solid Dielectric Material

Abstract: The monitoring of partial discharges (PDs) is one of the main methods used worldwide for evaluation and diagnosis of the insulation conditions in equipment powered by medium and high voltages. The occurrence of PDs is usually an indication of the appearance of insulation defects, which over time can compromise the dielectric withstand of the material used, increasing the probability of complete breakdown. In general, laboratory tests for detecting and registering PDs are carried out using purely sinusoidal vol… Show more

“…In the model with a seed electron arises the question about the ratio of the rates of the processes. The model with a seed electron has been studied in detail in the works [ [7]; [8]] at sinusoidal and nonsinusoidal voltages with a harmonic composition up to the 20th harmonic. Verification of the model was carried out by comparing the phase distributions obtained in the simulation and in the experiment.…”

“…To take into account the distribution of PDs in magnitude, the three-capacitor model was supplemented with a seed electron appearance model [ [7]], which showed good agreement between the phase distributions of PDs obtained experimentally and by simulation for a wide range of non-sinusoidal voltages [ [7]; [8]]. The model assumes that PD in a defect occurs when two conditions are met: the electric field strength in the defect exceeds the value sufficient for the development of an electron avalanche and there is a seed electron in the defect.…”

“…However, PD diagnostic methods rely on human experts to analyze the data, which is time consuming, costly, and limits the amount of data that can be inspected. While PD monitoring has standard methods to assess insulation health, real-world voltage distortions can affect how discharge responses appear [5]. Furthermore, multiple classes of discharges can emerge simultaneously [6].…”

“…The complex nature of PD patterns necessitates sophisticated analysis techniques. As noted in [5], real-world voltage distortions can significantly alter the appearance of discharge responses, making interpretation challenging. Furthermore, the simultaneous occurrence of multiple PD classes, as observed in [2,[14][15][16], further increases the difficulty of accurate classification.…”
